Beginning this Sunday, September 5, we enter into a month of special worship services focusing on God's beautiful creation and our roles in caring for it. In this Season of Creation we follow the lead of the psalm writers and celebrate with creation — with the forests, the rivers and the fields, which praise the Creator in their own way.
Bible readings focus especially on the story of Earth, which complements the story of God and the story of humanity in the Scriptures.
We commit ourselves to a ministry of healing Earth, with Christ and creation as our partners.
Below are each Sunday’s emphases and ways we can all participate:
Sunday, Sept. 5 -- Oceans, Rivers and Lakes Sunday
Sunday, Sept. 12 will be Fauna and Flora Sunday
· Please bring stuffed animals as symbols of the vast array of God's non-human creatures. These stuffed animals will be given to the Metro Police Department for them to give away to children as part of their charity work.
Sunday, Sept. 19 will be Earth and Cosmos Sunday
· Photos – please send me (James Cole) a digital copy of a favorite photo of creation or nature or animals to be used in a presentation in church on Sept.19 Send to revjcole@bellsouth.net
Sunday, Sept. 26 in anticipation of St. Francis of Assisi day will be a Blessing of the Animals Service. A Blessing of the Animals witnesses to God’s and the Church’s love, care, and concern for creation. As we recognize our mutual interdependence with God’s creatures, the Church’s witness of stewardship of creation is strengthened.
· Please bring your pets to church – they must be in a pet carrier or on a leash. We will worship out on the front lawn for this service.
In General – Try to drive less and walk or ride more during this month. Try to use less and conserve more water, electricity, fuel, paper products, etc. Many of the things that make up our daily living are costly and have a toll on our environment. Definitely continue recycling or begin recycling as part of caring for our earth.
Let us be in prayer as we prepare for and share in a Season of Creation. Rev.James Cole
